Although germanium has a much higher transmittance than silicon at 8-14 μm, and although silicon’s characteristics are not suitable for 8-14 μm, germanium is difficult to buy due to China’s current export controls on germanium. In some thermal imaging windows, gas detection, and infrared optical systems, it can achieve a transmittance of more than 80% at 8-14 μm through multi-layer AR coating. In addition, silicon has a lower density and higher mechanical strength, so it can replace germanium under certain conditions.
