Sapphire prisms are optical prisms fabricated from optical-grade sapphire substrates. Coligh Optics is a manufacturer of sapphire prisms, producing optical prisms made from single-crystal sapphire, including various common prism types such as:

The Charateristic Of Optical Sappire Prism

Sapphire prisms are widely adopted in many high-end optical systems due to the following characteristics:

  • With a Mohs hardness of 9, sapphire prisms are second only to diamond and surpass materials like fused silica and calcium fluoride.
  • Their transmission bandwidth is exceptionally broad, spanning from ultraviolet to mid-infrared, making them particularly suitable for applications requiring wide-band operation.
  • Sapphire prisms maintain stable performance at high temperatures, exhibiting high thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion coefficient, ensuring consistent optical properties under temperature variations.
  • They possess stable chemical and environmental resistance, demonstrating strong corrosion resistance against acidic and alkaline solvents.
  • Sapphire possesses a high refractive index, approximately 1.76 at 589 nm, enabling the design of larger refraction angles. It exhibits slight birefringence, which can be controlled via the optical axis orientation in polarization applications.

Application Of Sapphire Prism

  • Laser Beam Steering
    In high-power laser systems, sapphire excels due to its inherent properties: high-temperature resistance, a high laser damage threshold, and resistance to laser ablation. Sapphire prisms, serving as beam deflection or angle correction elements, can adjust the laser’s incident and exit angles within the optical path, providing exceptionally stable laser deflection.
  • Spectrometers
    Sapphire exhibits excellent transmittance across the ultraviolet to infrared spectrum and possesses a high refractive index. In spectrometers, it serves as a dispersive prism or waveplate prism to decompose incident light into distinct wavelengths. It is also utilized for polarization analysis and interferometry.
